regarded by most as the most comprehension pinnacle of arne jacobsen’s work. a design clearly stamped by his genius in all regards from the building itself down to the ashtrays his control on design was absolute. built in 1956-60 it has come time for the radison sas royal hotel copenhagen to be totally refurbished. the german-iranian architect and interior designer, ms. yasmine mahmoudieh, has been entrusted with the awesome task of renovating the cultural heritage left by mr. jacobsen and preparing it for the next millennium. ms. mahmoudieh is known the world over for her avant-garde style, having the design and refurbishment of a long list of famous hotels to her credit. these include hotel vier jahreszeiten in hamburg, hotel baltschug kempinski in moscow, and the suites at the regent beverly wilshire where ‚pretty woman’ was filmed. the tremendous challenge of succeeding arne jacobsen has been carried out with the greatest respect for his work.
arne jacobsen’s design will still be omnipresent at the radisson sas royal hotel copenhagen, as the lobby will remain unchanged, and still be furnished with the famous swan chairs which mr. jacobsen designed especially for the hotel. the hotel rooms also include chairs, a floor lamp, plumbing fixtures and others details from his original design. as token of respect, room 606 has been retained exactly as it was designed by arne jacobsen.
the first phase (48 rooms) of remodelling was completed in june 1999, another 9 floors (144 rooms) will be ready before the summer of 2000. by its conclusion in spring 2001, the project will have cost $10.5 million us. i bet i know which room is continually asked for. i would like to thank the hotel’s management particularly ms irene mikkelsen for her assistance. photographs by kim ahm forwarded to me of the refurbishment will be included here shortly.
